I started out trying to write a tribute to Thelonious Monk using language the way he used notes. I would up writing an elegy that re-imagines his most famous tune through the eyes of his wife. It is not at all want I set out to do or even wanted to do. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending) this poem is much better than the poem I was trying to write. I also wasn’t trying to write a poem that contained a puzzle (or two) but that happened as well. I’m going with this version because I’m vain.
Does it deserve a G-140 classification? Time will tell.
